The filmmakers behind Reagan, a movie that stars Dennis Quaid as the 40th U.S. president, are set to announce Monday that they have secured financing from a group called TriStar Global Entertainment based in Canada and Los Angeles.
In the feature film, Quaid plays Ronald Reagan as an older man, while he is played as a younger man by David Henrie, the actor best known for his role as Justin Russo in the kids’ show Wizards of Waverly Place.TriStar was founded in 2009 by Michael Olsen, the former president of Odyssey Media, as a one-stop shop for financing movie and TV projects with budgets as small as $5 million to as large as $50 million, though occasionally exceeding that amount.
TriStar, along with Chris Savino and Inclusive Capital Group recently launched a $250 million production slate for 10 film and TV productions to begin next year. Past films the team has helped fund include Crooked Tree and Bad Karma.
Reagan is produced by Mark Joseph, who was a producer on Max Rose, the final film from legendary comedian Jerry Lewis, and Ralph Winter of the X-Men franchise. The biopic is directed by Sean McNamara, best known for directing Soul Surfer and The Miracle Season. It is written by Howie Klausner, who based his screenplay on two Reagan biographies written by Paul Kengor. “We’ve been watching the development of this film, and we’re excited to see that it’s now ready to go. It’s a great story,” said Olsen.
The movie has been in development for several years and will begin shooting next year, according to insiders. “We are honored to see this film finally come to fruition,” said Giovanni Jackson, who helped Olsen create TriStar.
